Memory in the Making | Restaurant Identity Film for Adam Kodovas & Ex Machina

From Memory to Restaurant Identity

A cinematic portrait of Adam Kodovas and the philosophy behind Ex Machina

Memory in the making

Restaurant identity film by Vice Versa

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Restaurant Identity Film | Adam Kodovas & Ex Machina

Memory in the Making evolves  into a restaurant identity film for Adam Kodovas & Ex Machina: a short  cinematic film built around personal narrative, sourcing philosophy and the way a chef-led restaurant defines itself.

For Adam Kodovas and Ex Machina, the story begins before the dish. It begins in the early rush of the fish market, in the choice of a humble Greek pink shrimp, and in a way of thinking where nothing is secondary and nothing is wasted.

The ingredient was selected precisely because it is small, fragile and demanding, a modest product capable of revealing a much larger culinary position. Through the film, the shrimp becomes more than a recipe. It becomes a way to speak about memory, instinct, discipline and respect.

The narrative traces how personal experience returns through the act of cooking: not as nostalgia, but as method. This is where the philosophy of Ex Machina becomes visible, through choice, transformation and zero waste what still carries value.

Creative & Production Framework

The project was developed by Vice Versa as part of the Memory in the Making series, with the objective of creating a film that would strengthen the public identity of Adam Kodovas and Ex Machina through an authored, cinematic narrative.

After approaching the chef with the concept, we selected a dish that could resonate with his holistic zero-waste philosophy. The Greek pink shrimp became the centre of the story: the body transformed into a lightly cured tartar, while the heads and remaining parts became paste, oil, powder and garum.

The production unfolded over two shooting days. One part followed the sourcing process at the fish market in Keratsini. The second took place inside Ex Machina, focusing on the execution of the recipe and the controlled rhythm of the kitchen.

Vice Versa shaped the final film through concept development, voice-over refinement and recording, cinematography, graphic elements, sound design and colour grading. Every layer was designed to support the recipe and give the chef’s philosophy the cinematic weight it deserved.

Use & Positioning

The final film functions as a high-impact branding asset for Adam Kodovas and Ex Machina. It does not simply promote a dish; it gives form to the thinking behind the restaurant.

For chefs, pastry chefs, restaurants and hospitality groups, this format offers a more intelligent alternative to conventional food content. It connects culinary creation to identity, allowing the audience to understand not only what is served, but how the people behind the brand think, source, choose and create.

Memory in the Making is designed for chef-led brands entering a more mature chapter, restaurants that need to communicate a sharper, more personal and more memorable version of themselves.

In this case, the film positions Ex Machina not only as a restaurant, but as a culinary voice shaped by memory, instinct, zero-waste thinking and creative discipline.

Athinagoras Kostakos | Full Circle. A Visual Content System for a Chef Brand

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Full Circle, a visual content system for a chef brand

How do you create a recognisable visual language around a chef?

Full Circle is an ongoing culinary film series created for chef Athinagoras Kostakos.
The series explores the principles that shape his approach to food: simplicity, balance, seasonality, tension, hospitality and continuous evolution.
Each episode is about a different dish while contributing to a broader narrative about process, desicion and craft.

The Strategy

The objective was not to create individual recipe videos, but to develop a recognisable content framework that supports a chef’s personal brand.

The Creative Framework

Full Circle

_Process, Not Result
The focus is not the finished dish, but the decisions that shape it.Full Circle explores the space between ingredients and outcome, where instinct, experience and judgement define the result.
_Recurring Visual Language
Different dishes. Same philosophy. Same visual language.
_Circle Motif
A visual expression of the series’ central idea: every ending is the beginning of something new.
_Rhythm
A carefully controlled rhythm balances moments of energy and stillness, shaping the pace of each film.
_Recurring Voice-Over Philosophy
The voice-over functions as a collection of recurring principles, giving each film its own perspective, in a shared philosophy that runs across the series.
_Cinematic Food Storytelling
A blend of food, film and philosophy, transforming individual recipes into stories about process, balance, evolution and craft.

Chef Brand Development

for Athinagoras Kostakos

Intro Teaser

Athinagoras Kostakos had already built a strong digital presence, with more than one million followers engaging with recipe-focused content. The existing films successfully documented the execution of each dish through natural sound and straightforward instruction.

Our objective was not to replace that format, but to expand it.

Rather than focusing solely on how a recipe is prepared, we shifted the narrative towards the craft behind it: the decisions, philosophy and creative process that define the chef’s identity. Through a carefully controlled rhythm, cinematic storytelling and a recurring visual language, the series introduced a more distinctive editorial approach while preserving the authenticity and natural character of the cooking itself.
A new rhythmic structure became a defining element of the series. Carefully placed percussive sequences introduce momentum, punctuating key moments in the preparation and creating a clear sense of progression. Combined with natural kitchen sounds, this approach preserves the authenticity of the process while transforming each recipe into a more engaging cinematic narrative.

Episodes

Philosophy of a Chef

Visual Prelude | Each episode opens with a sequence of blurred black-and-white stills, assembled as a rhythmic stop-motion introduction. Rather than revealing the dish immediately, the images create anticipation through abstraction and movement. Guided by the recurring circular motif, the sequence gradually resolves into the Full Circle motion identity, establishing a recognisable opening that connects every film in the series.

Behind The System

 Voice-Over Framework

At the heart of the series lies a short recurring text. Not a narration of the recipe, but a reflection on the process behind it; a reminder that growth comes from questioning, simplifying, evolving and, eventually, returning with a different perspective.

Not a result. A process.
Start with what you know.
Question it.
Push it.
Simplify it.
Trust it.
Let it change.
Return to it.
See it differently.
Close a circle.
Another one begins.

Visual Consistency

Consistency was a strategic element of the project. Across all eleven episodes, a shared creative framework connects cinematography, editing, sound design, music, motion graphics and voice-over, creating a recognisable identity for the series. While each film explores a different dish and theme, all are built upon the same visuals, narrative structure and editing approach, allowing individual episodes to stand independently while contributing to a larger and coherent body of work.

Recurring Motifs

A custom After Effects graphic evolves throughout the series as an eleven-segment circle. Each episode completes a new section, gradually building towards a fully closed form. Beyond its role as a graphic element, the motif serves as a visual representation of the series’ narrative arc: a journey that ultimately returns to its starting point.

Motion Identity

A bespoke visual identity was developed specifically for Full Circle, extending the concept beyond the films themselves. Built around the recurring circle motif, the logo and its animated reveal become an integral part of the narrative, introducing and concluding each episode with a consistent visual signature.

The same design principles were carried across every touchpoint of the project, from the recipe covers and episode artwork to the motion graphics, ensuring that every visual element belongs to a single, cohesive identity. Nothing was designed in isolation; every asset contributes to the recognisability of the series.

Designed to evolve alongside the films, the animation reinforces the central idea of Full Circle: progression, completion and renewal. More than a title sequence, it becomes a recognisable signature that connects every episode into one unified body of work.

Project Scope

The objective was never to produce eleven recipe films.
It was to create a system capable of growing with the chef.

A visual language that audiences recognise before they read a title. A creative framework where every new episode adds value to the one before it. Because the strongest brands are not built through individual pieces of content, but through consistency, intention and time.

Alati Restaurant Santorini — Vedema Dining Project

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Alati — Restaurant in Santorini

Alati Restaurant operates within a restored winery in Santorini, forming part of the refined hospitality setting of Vedema, a Luxury Collection Resort. The project focused on presenting Mediterranean cuisine within this distinctive architectural environment, bringing together the interior dining space and the terrace overlooking the vineyards and the village of Megalohori. The objective was to capture the atmosphere of place, where landscape, structure and cuisine naturally blend.

Culinary Direction

At Alati, the visual work addressed both plate and place. While a selection of signature dishes was documented, equal emphasis was given to the restored winery setting, stone vaults, controlled lighting, and the intimate scale that defines the dining environment.
The project was realised during the tenure of French Chef Olivier Campanha, whose structured, technique-driven approach shaped the tone of the kitchen at the time.
Our approach positioned the cuisine within its architectural context. Composition and light were resolved to respect the cellar’s depth and texture, allowing food and space to operate as a single experience. The result presents not isolated plates, but a fine dining identity rooted in atmosphere, materiality, and restraint.

Use – Strategic Visuals

The resulting imagery supports Alati’s professional presentation across digital and brand platforms. Developed for sustained use, the material provides a clear and consistent visual reference of the restaurant’s culinary and spatial identity.
